Magazine's Top 100 Wines Of The Year All Made By Advertisers
Editor points to blind methodology.
Releasing the results of what it called the most rigorous blind evaluation in the category, a national wine magazine published its Top 100 Wines of the Year on Monday, all 100 of which are made by companies that advertise in the magazine, sources reported.
The overlap is the fourth consecutive year at 100 percent.
“I understand how that reads, and what I’d point out is that our advertisers also happen to be our most serious producers, which is not a coincidence — the people investing in this category are the people who care about this category,” said editor-in-chief Vance Prudhomme, adding that the tasting panel works blind and never sees a label. “There are 11,000 bonded wineries in this country. A hundred of them made this list. If you ask me, the overlap says a great deal more about who’s showing up than it says about us.”
The No. 1 wine, a $19 Central Valley Chardonnay, is made by the magazine’s largest advertiser. It appeared on the cover.
At press time, the magazine had opened 2027 media kit sales with a new placement tier called Editorial Adjacency.
