Valley Agrees Not To Mention August

Vintage summaries move directly from July 28 to September 4 in unspoken consensus.

Reaching what participants described as a quiet and entirely unspoken consensus, the Napa Valley wine community confirmed Monday that it had collectively agreed not to bring up August, sources reported. “We’re really excited about this vintage. Beautiful spring, textbook September, gorgeous fruit at the crush pad,” said grower liaison Marla Teasdale, whose vintage summary runs eleven paragraphs and moves directly from July 28 to September 4. “Everything really came together at the end.” Pressed on the six-week gap, Teasdale said the growing season had been dynamic, that every year presents its own opportunities, and that she had a call. At press time, four separate winery newsletters had described the vintage as “a year.”
