Vintner Confident Vines Will Adapt To Whatever This Is
Third-generation grower cites grandfather's experience with frost, says "frost" again more slowly.
Standing at the edge of a block that has now experienced a February bud break, a 116-degree day in May, and an inch of rain during harvest, third-generation vintner Dale Sowerby expressed confidence Tuesday that the vines would figure out whatever this is, sources reported. “Grapevines are tough. They’ve been through a lot,” said Sowerby, gesturing at a plant that had produced fruit in one season under conditions unrecorded in the region’s 150 years of documentation. “My grandfather farmed through some real swings too.” Asked to characterize the swings his grandfather farmed through, Sowerby muttered terroir under his breath. He then said the word “frost”.
