Somm Passes Blind Tasting By Simply Guessing Expensive
System correct 31 consecutive times; "old world in structure, new world in fruit" never once challenged.
Advancing to the final round of a prestigious blind tasting examination Saturday, sommelier Devin Marchetti confirmed that his method consisted of determining whether the wine was expensive and then naming an expensive place, sources reported. “The wine’s not going to be from somewhere cheap. They didn’t pull a cheap wine for the exam,” said Marchetti, who has correctly identified 31 consecutive wines using this system. “So really it’s a coin flip between two or three regions where they make the good stuff, and then you just talk for a while about the finish.” Marchetti added that he had also been describing wines as “old world in structure, new world in fruit,” a phrase he confirmed means nothing, but has never once been challenged.
